You May Never Be as Good at Filmmaking as You Want to Be, & That’s OK

If you care deeply about the craft of filmmaking, chances are that you have incredibly high standards for what makes a “good film.” Trying to live up to those standards can be nearly impossible.

In a new video from DSLRguide, Simon Cade talks about that very subject — about why the creative process is inherently fraught with failure and self-doubt — and he offers one simple tip to combat this psychological barrier that all of us face at some point or another. This one is Simon’s most personal videos yet, and in my opinion, one of his best. Check it out:

I’ve been big on the psychology of filmmaking lately, largely because those self-imposed mental barriers seem to be one of the biggest factors in why more people don’t actively create. And few psychological barriers are as difficult to overcome as “the gap,” the one between your expectations and your reality. No one else has summed up this dilemma quite as well as Ira Glass, host of This American Life.

GoPro HERO4 Session Price Has Been Cut to Just $200

The price of GoPro‘s HERO4 Session has been slashed twice in recent months from its original $400 price tag.

Two $100 price drops in a span of 5 months have brought the Session down to $200, which makes a lot more sense as its specs didn’t line up with the more expensive cameras in the HERO line — especially the HERO4 Silver. The Session at $200 now sits right next to the other entry-level camera, the HERO+, and cheaper than the LCD version of the HERO+ ($300), both of which have a physical design very similar to the higher-end cameras (unlike the smaller cube form of the Session). Another pain with this particular model has been the fact that the battery is not removable, so after it runs out, the whole device must be charged (or it needs to be tethered to a battery of some kind).

If you’ve forgotten what the Session is capable of, here’s a refresher:

Vimeo is Going 4K and Adding Variable Bitrate Streaming

Vimeo’s player is getting a bit of an overhaul.

Not only will the company be rolling out 4K streaming over the next few months to all users, but they’re also enabling adaptive bitrate streaming, which means that the player will adapt and change the resolution of the video based on the internet connection you’re viewing from (or you can select the resolution you want). While rival YouTube has done this for years, and has even started 8K streaming, it’s nice to see the company catching up and starting to get into the 4K streaming game. Vimeo did start to experiment with 4K downloads and some 4K streaming starting at the beginning of 2015, but only for select users.

Another advantage of this 4K rollout is that Vimeo On Demand, their VOD service, will also get 4K streaming in addition to the 4K downloads that are already available. Here are more details from Variety on the Vimeo 4K plans:

Who, Where, & How Much? A Breakdown of the 15 Films that Made the Oscars’ Doc Shortlist

What does it take to make the Oscars Feature Documentary Shortlist? At least three things: a top-tier festival premiere, a theatrical run, and a great movie. Oh, that’s all?!

It’s a winding road, that’s for sure. This year, 124 films were submitted after having qualified for the Academy Awards — a huge feat all on its own. Of the 124, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have now chosen 15 for the shortlist. From this shortlist, featuring a dizzying array of good films, only five will emerge after a final voting round for the prime-time red carpet event that is the Oscars.

In the breakneck evolution of the documentary genre and the accompanying growth of mesmerizing docs being made, it’s been a challenge for the Academy to keep up. Over the last few years, the Academy has repeatedly changed its criteria for doc eligibility to thin the numbers of submissions. And while the stiffening rules have have irked independent filmmakers who can’t afford increasingly strenuous theatrical runs — reports claim that there are still too many films for the 240 voting members of the Academy to watch.

Hitchcock Himself Becomes the Villain in the Short Film Mashup ‘Master of Suspense’

We know that Alfred Hitchcock is one of the greatest directors of all time, but what if, in his greatest plot twist ever, the Master of Suspense became the villain within his own cinematic world?

In this short film, aptly named Master of Suspense, ol’ Hitch becomes just that. Through a process of splicing together footage from several of his films, as well as his cameos, Fabrice Mathieu has created a clever short “Mashup Noir” that tells an original story about a peculiar, portly man that goes on the run after murdering a woman in a shower.

Check it out below:

According to the description, the mashup was created using extracts from 30 of Hitchcock’s films, as well as his many appearances and cameos in said films and trailers. As you might’ve noticed, special effects were used to complete the narrative, including the wanted poster and newspaper articles. Mathieu also created a new sound design that includes music from Bernard Herrmann.
